The mission for this bespoke project was to design and create an upgraded version of their house sign. This task came with an open canvas for creativity, in terms of size and style, as the previous sign was only a placeholder for what we were about to create.
In a rather unusual twist to our regular order of events, we began with a treasure hunt in our wood stash, digging through the piles of character-filled planks, small pieces we can’t bear to throw away, and offcuts from previous projects that are big enough to do the job.
Once we’d netted ourselves a selection of pieces that were suitably sized, we picked the best of the bunch and put on our creative hat. Drawing plenty of inspiration from our previous projects, and with a bit of scribbling, we came up with a couple of designs that could make it onto the final piece. From an early stage, we already knew that our design would have concealed hanging plates on the back, to save the front from sporting any evidence of being fixed to the wall.
Upon approval of the perfect design, we got to work, precisely engraving the text and border elements. With the aim for maximum readability, we went with the tried-and-true black paint method, which will ensure that the sign is perfectly readable from the street. For the final touches, we gave the sign many coats of a clear protective UV-resistant finish, which will help the sign resist the elements and keep it looking great for many years to come.
Creating signs like this might seem straightforward to some, but for us, it’s about crafting a purpose into the wood. Every project is unique, each sign a silent witness to the lives that it greets every day.
We love the potential for creativity and individuality that every sign project gives, even when it’s just a single piece of wood.
